Cardiovascular (heart) disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women with about 610,000 people a year being from the United States alone.* According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease can include a variety of effects such as heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmia, and heart valve problems. These are all caused mostly by a process called atherosclerosis, or the build-up of plaque in the arteries. When plaque is built up in the arteries, it makes it harder for blood to flow thru your body.
So in honor of the annual Heart Mini Marathon to benefit the American Heart Association, this month we will be featuring 5 super foods that help prevent cardiovascular disease.

FISH
Eating salmon, tuna, and trout are all great sources for omega-3 fatty acids which are a type of polyunsaturated fats that help lower the bad cholesterol in your blood and support heart health. (i.e. Other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids are walnuts, flaxseeds, and vegetable oils)
AVOCADO
Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats which can help decrease the bad cholesterol AND increase the good cholesterol in blood. Avocados are also packed with vitamin E, C, and B6, potassium and fiber which all support heart and body health.
FRESH FRUITS & VEGGIES
Not only are fruits and vegetables loaded with vitamins and minerals that your body needs for healthy function, but they are also high in fiber and plant substances that help prevent cardiovascular disease.
OATMEAL
Whole grains, such as oatmeal, are high in soluble fiber, vitamins and minerals that help regulate blood pressure and lower cholesterol.
BLUEBERRIES
Berries like blueberries and strawberries contain antioxidants that help decrease blood pressure and dilate blood vessels.
These are just a few of the many healthy food options out there that can help prevent heart disease and high blood pressure. Eating healthy foods along with regular exercise are the best ways to prevent almost all diseases and sicknesses. Time to eat your heart out!
